Side Effects

Side Effects

Vary between medications. Common side effects of sleep medications are:
  • Daytime drowsiness
  • Dizziness, unsteadiness
  • Memory problems
  • Drugged feeling
  • Confusion
  • Nightmares, unusual dreams
  • General feeling of discomfort or feeling unwell
Warning Atlhough the occurrences are rare, FDA has issued warnings regarding two dangerous side effects of a number of sleep medications:
  • Complex sleep related behaviors including sleep-driving and less dangerous activities like making phone calls, cooking and eating food, or having sex have all been reported, -- all while still asleep.
  • Life-threatening allergic reactions and severe facial swelling.

There appears to be a greater risk for dangerous activities such as sleep driving when sleep medications are taken with alcohol or other sedative medications.
